Often performed through the integration of actuators, sensors, and control units, this provides benefits such as reduced energy consumption in buildings but also increases the complexity of the façade design. To deal efficiently with the higher complexity, this article aims to provide suitable decision support for the early design phase, identify suitable design goals, and compare these to previously implemented AF (make-or-buy decision). There is particular focus on the AF-specific characteristics, as these are new compared to well-known conventional façades. To systematically develop decision support, requirements are identified in expert interviews and literature and the current state of the art is evaluated against these. Research gaps found in current methods are addressed in this article and continuous decision support is developed for the early design phase of an integrated design pro-cess. This support includes a checklist with AF-specific characteristics and a digitally imple-mented database of AF. Based on the requirements, an evaluation is performed for both methods: this includes the comparison of the results to three ongoing AF projects and the assignment of 40 case studies to the database. Why are adaptive facades not widely used in practice? Identifying ecological and economical benefits with life cycle assessment23220232023 Artikel IKTD MPE PUK The challenges concerning climate change require innovative approaches. Adaptive façades (AF) represent a promising approach, as making the façade adaptable brings several benefits such as less energy usage or increased comfort. Nevertheless, they are not widely used in practice, since the known advantages/motivators appeal in particular to stakeholders who have little involvement in the decision-making of the design process and entail compromises to stakeholders who do. In this article it is shown that besides the known advantages and compromises of AF, there are further motivators for stakeholders with high decision-making power. In a case study, a building with typical centralized ventilation is compared with a building where an AF with an integrated ventilation system was installed to substitute the centralized ventilation system. This results in a lower building height and corresponding weight of the construction, as the central duct system can be eliminated. 3 m of building height and up to 340 tons of material can be saved, which results in avoided impact on climate change of 110 tons CO2-eqviv. (−7%). During utilization, 615 tons of CO2-eqviv. Can be avoided. The lifecycle costs can be reduced by 485,000 € while the rentable floor space can be increased by 4%.The Integrated Design Process of Adaptive Facades - A Comprehensive Perspectivehttps://puma.ub.uni-stuttgart.de/bibtex/224fb2360e9169c5422b599e796691a67/iktd_groupiktd_group2023-09-14T14:36:40+02:002023 Artikel IKTD MPE PUK M. One promising approach with this effect is to apply adaptive façades (AF), which can adapt their properties to changing environmental conditions and user needs. However, designing AF properly is a complex and highly interdisciplinary task. To support the integrated design of AF, this contribution deals with the integrated design process. Therefore, first, requirements for an integrated design process of AF are raised, and then the current state of the literature on design procedures for AF is evaluated against them. This revealed several research gaps and weaknesses of the existing procedures. Two of the gaps – the consideration of the lifecycle and the interfaces between the tasks of the stakeholders involved in the lifecycle – are dealt with in this contribution. The results are an overview of the current state of the literature (300 papers are reviewed), a model that describes the lifecycle of adaptive façades and the stakeholders involved in it. Finally a framework for the integrated design process of AF on a lifecycle basis is presented and serves as a basis for further research on this topic.Ökobilanzierung adaptiver Hüllen und Strukturenhttps://puma.ub.uni-stuttgart.de/bibtex/2d38961b36062ac2350b7768746662cbd/iktd_groupiktd_group2022-10-04T14:25:53+02:002022 @sfb1244 AT Artikel IABP IKTD IKTS MPE PUK sfb1244 D. Considering the associated resource consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, new approaches are needed in order to reduce the built environment’s impact on the ongoing climate crisis. Various studies have demonstrated that adaptive building structures offer a potential solution for reducing material resource consumption and associated emissions. Adaptive structures have the ability to improve load-bearing performance by specifically reacting to external loads. This work applies the concept of adaptive structures to reinforced concrete slabs through the integration of fluidic actuators into the cross-section. The optimal integration of actuators in reinforced concrete slabs is a challenging interdisciplinary design problem that involves many parameters. In this work, actuation influence matrices are extended to slabs and used as an analysis and evaluation tool for deriving actuation concepts for adaptive slabs with integrated fluidic actuators. To define requirements for the actuator concept, a new procedure for the selection of actuation modes, actuator placement and the computation of actuation forces is developed. This method can also be employed to compute the required number of active elements for a given load case. The new method is highlighted in a case study of a 2 m × 2 m floor.
