lightweight design2920192019 IKTD KT Konferenzbeitrag MPE myown Lightweight-design methods for the early phases of the product-development process are becoming increasingly important due to their significant influence on the products’ mass. Besides mass reduction, the redistribution of mass within a product can help to achieve lightweight-design targets much more effectively. The aim of this paper is to raise awareness of lightweight-design tasks during the conceptual phase, in which the distribution of mass constitutes a significant element of the designers’ work. Due to the fact that mass distribution always affects the structure of a product, the authors link the lightweight-design tasks investigated to product architecture design in the conceptual phase. This enables different methods to be identified which can support the designer in achieving the lightweight-design task through mass distribution.AN APPROACH FOR THE MULTI-CRITERIA DERIVATION OF LIGHTWEIGHT POTENTIALhttps://puma.ub.uni-stuttgart.de/bibtex/21a044ac3c0fb24aaf7e2430ca44ef692/danielrothdanielroth2021-06-22T22:14:05+02:002020 IKTD KT MPE myown tagungsbeitrag <span data-person-type="author" class="authorEditorList "><span><span itemtype="http://schema.org/Person" itemscope="itemscope" itemprop="author"><a title="Felix Laufer" itemprop="url" href="/person/18e13e2f1559ae38bb7ea34a463f6ecf5/author/0"><span itemprop="name">F. Current methods for analyzing a product’s potential to be reduced in mass only deal with a few of the most important criteria for lightweight design. This paper presents an approach transferring cost-benefit analysis to the holistic derivation of lightweight potential. The approach is able to deal with different types of criteria supporting the designer in indentifying the most promising components for mass reduction. Besides mass reduction, the redistribution of mass within the product can support the designer in addressing lightweight-design motivations more effectively. This paper introduces a method of systematic mass distribution using the design structure matrix (DSM). Various motivations for lightweight design are therefore transformed into dependencies among product components. A case study of a high-pressure water-jetting unit serves as an application example to illustrate the procedure introduced. Based on a clustering algorithm, novel lightweight-driven product architectures are derived to support optimized mass distribution for the jetting unit.Framework of an Ambidextrous Process of Idea Management Supporting the Downstream Product Development Processhttps://puma.ub.uni-stuttgart.de/bibtex/2cf3a27bfcd5b8283e2fc82bf6e455703/danielrothdanielroth2021-06-22T22:10:51+02:002021 iktd kt mpe myown tagungsbeitrag <span data-person-type="author" class="authorEditorList "><span><span itemtype="http://schema.org/Person" itemscope="itemscope" itemprop="author"><a title="Thorsten Herrmann" itemprop="url" href="/person/13f75046c6b91654a77ab6c55d293ef38/author/0"><span itemprop="name">T. Companies are approaching radical and incremental ideas frequently with the same methods, although many reasoned claims exists for treating ideas differently according to the degree of novelty. The paper aims to address the fact that ambidexterity does not play any specific role in the front end. Therefore, a framework of an extended idea process model based on the idea of ambidexterity is shown and initial test results are presented.
