The German Research Foundation (DFG) is funding a research unit (FOR639) whichfocuses on the Sensorless Automated Condition Monitoring (SACM). This researchunit developed and tested SACM-algorithms based only on signals which areavailable in position controlled drives such as position, speed and motorcurrent and the comparison with characteristic parameters which were takenwhen the machine was new. The presented results demonstrate that it ispossible to predict the breakdown of machine tool components such as bearingsand ball screws and even to identify specific defects.
