Many activities, which arenecessary during the start-up can beautomated. Among them are the configuration of control- and field-bus systems,user interfaces, and industrialautomation devices, as well as the extensive testing of functions. Inreconfigurable manufacturing the concept ofmechatronic modularisation leads to new system boundaries. As a result, RMSare composed of diversemechatronic modules (MM) which contain mechanical and electrical components aswell information technology.This paper presents an approach to automate the start-up of a RMS by applyinga machine-internalservice-oriented architecture. Moreover, a reference platform is presented,which can be used for research on theautomatic generation of start-up procedures for RMS systems. Modules containnot only a range of mechatronicfunctions, but also additional software and Web-Services, which support theautomatic start-up of a machine.Internal Web-Service communication is handled by a Service-Bus whosecommunication is tunnelled through anautomation-bus system. Thus, deterministic real-time communication can becombined with flexible Web-Servicecommunication for the configuration and set-up of MM. Moreover, every MM isequipped with a real-timesimulation model for mechanical and electrical parts and a database to storemodule specific data like CADmodels, module descriptions and software components. The functionality forconfiguring MMs and the start-upsequence generation for the machining system is provided by an internalconfiguration system based onWeb-Services. Finally, a RMS system can be automatically put into operation bymeans of the configuration systemwhich derives and executes an automatically generated start-up sequence.
