Abstract
In this paper, we apply the notion of eligibility to the case of French senators by developing two analytical tools: the personal component which refers to the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the candidates and elected officials and institutional factors – such as the voting system and the impact of political parties. We are doing so by, first, analysing the socio-political characteristics of the French senators. And second, by studying whether and if so how the existence of two different voting methods – two-round majority and proportional – impacts on the demographic and socio-economic profile of the senators.
