Currently, the Institute for Control Engineering of Machine Tools andManufacturing Units (ISW) has been researching and developing a universalconcept for a redundant, failure-tolerant numerical control system. Theresults of this research project meet the increasing demands on thereliability of machines and plants and the frequent applications of numericalcontrols in safety critical areas. In this case, reliability means thecapability of a numerical control to function according to its specificationduring the entire machining time. This is achieved by a redundant design andwill be exhibited on a demonstrator, which is introduced in this paper.
