INVESTIGATION OF THE INFLUENCE OF SUPERIMPOSED INTENSITY DISTRIBUTIONS ON THE SPATTER BEHAVIOR IN LASER WELDING OF STEEL USING ONLINE X-RAY DIAGNOSTICS

Abstract

The influence of superimposed intensity distributions on the number of generated spatters, the capillary shape, and the melt flows in the melt pool during laser welding of mild steel was investigated using online high-speed X-Ray imaging. A change of the shape of the capillary was observed for different superimposed intensity distributions. A change in the size of the eddies in the melt pool was observed for welds with different amounts of generated spatters and a concentration of the streamlines of the flow field at the upper rear part of the capillary was observed for a high number of generated spatters, coinciding with the location of the generation of the spatters.
