Additive Manufacturing – Business Capabilities in the Product Design

. Stuttgarter Symposium für Produktentwicklung SSP 2017, page 24. Stuttgart, Fraunhofer IAO, (2017)

Abstract

The manufacturing technology, Additive Manufacturing (AM), can lead to radical changes of value chains and be a relevant factor of competition in industrial companies. The impulse for application often arises from divisions close to research. The product development, in particular, has substantial influence on the design of the entire product development and utilization processes. Companies, though, face the question of which adjustments to make internally, as well as towards third parties in order to economically and purposefully use the potential of AM. For this purpose, supportive concepts were developed, which pursue various degrees of abstraction and topical focuses. The present work demands an approach which can be broken down concerning the level of abstraction and which provides support for the initial as well as the continual application of AM. Therefore, a capability-based approach is subsequently used that meets these requirements. For the product development, capabilities are instantiated, which serve as a foundation for the derivation of needs for action.
