protection of the axial positions of square-planar platinum(II) center of (2,2'-bipyridine)dimesitylplatinum, characterized by X-ray diffraction. Luminescence and electrochem. reversible formation of Platinum(III)

, , and . Journal of Organometallic Chemistry, 440 (1-2): 207--217 (1992)

Abstract

The mol. structure of (2,2'-bipyridine)dimesitylplatinum as detd. by x-ray diffraction reveals efficient protection of the axial positions of the essentially square-planar platinum(II) center. The chem. consequences include a strongly diminished propensity towards oxidative addn. and the electrochem. reversible oxidn. at about +0.4 V vs. Fc/Fc+ to a reactive Pt(III) cation. In conjunction with the MLCT absorption and emission energies and the potential for reversible redn. to an anion radical complex, the contributions from intra- and intermol. reorganization could be reliably detd. on SciFinder(R)
