Rubbing seals are ruled out because of their high friction heat connected with untolerable deformations. Continuing their previous research and development on non-contacting shaft seals the authors now concentrate on collecting labyrinth seals for machine tool spindies. The basic functions of these labyrinths are discussed and put into practice. The paper introduces a variety of carefully thought-out labyrinth systems for practical application and the designer is supplied with detailed design directives. %@ 9401050643
