Abstract

The bearings of fast running spindies in precision machine tools are to be sealed leak -free against heavily splashing coolants and, eventually, injected lubricant has to be kept inside the bearing area. Rubbing seals are ruled out because of their high friction heat connected with untolerable deformations. Continuing their previous research and development on non-contacting shaft seals the authors now concentrate on collecting labyrinth seals for machine tool spindies. The basic functions of these labyrinths are discussed and put into practice. The paper introduces a variety of carefully thought-out labyrinth systems for practical application and the designer is supplied with detailed design directives.
