Abstract
The reaction of GaCl3 with t-Bu3SiNa(THF)2 in a 1:3 molar ratio produces, in addn. to hexa-tert-butyldisilane and NaCl, the tris(tri-tert-butylsilyl)digallanyl radical (tBu3Si)3Ga2 (1). An intermediate reaction product is chlorodisupersilylgallane, (t-Bu3Si)2GaCl (2), which reacts with t-Bu3SiNa to give the postulated intermediate (t-Bu3Si)2GaGa(SiBu-t3)2 (3) which subsequently loses t-Bu3Si· to give 1. 1 Was characterized by x-ray crystallog. (monoclinic, space group C2/c, R1 = 0.0687) and ESR. The bond between the Ga atoms has a formal bond order of 1.5. The intermediate existence of 3 is supported by the reaction of AlCl3 etherate with t-Bu3SiNa which gives (t-Bu3Si)2AlCl and then (t-Bu3Si)2AlAl(SiBu-t3)2, which does not form the analogous Al radical of 1. on SciFinder(R)
