Abstract

High-resolution imaging of bacterial populations in whole infected organs reveals a novel mechanism of mucosal colonization, where the occupation of a specialized microenvironment, or "microniche," in the gastric glands allows Helicobacter pylori to establish a stable bacterial reservoir in the stomach that enhances bacterial persistence and colonization resistance.
