Energy consumption is a substantial factor in the life cycle impact and totallifecycle cost of production systems and energy efficient factories areincreasingly favoured by legislation and customers. As a result, manufacturingcompanies are analyzing the energy consumption of production plants andmachines and have started to look for efficiency raising measures. In thispaper methods are introduced to maximize energy efficiency in productionplanning and control based on version of our generic model of energyconsumption of manufacturing machines extended to cover the interdependencieson the production system level. The method is based on the prediction ofenergy consumption for different usage profiles and applies differentoptimization methods to address planning and control problems at theproduction line and machine level. Supply processes are included in theconsiderations and it is reviewed how energy consumption minimization can becombined with other objectives in a multi criterion optimization approach.
