Guaranteeing energy efficient operation of production systems through a-priorioptimization is an extremely complex task. We therefore propose an alternativeapproach where controls can decide locally if an energy reduction is possibleand set components to energy-optimal states. In this paper we present resultsfrom the research group ECOMATION describing the information flow thatgenerates energy control loops on different levels based on model informationand an appropriate communication and control infrastructure. The communicationmechanisms and control structures in production systems and machines arepresented which allow using models automatically and coherently on allrequired levels of detail and abstraction.
